Heres a great learning opportunity for school kids and their parents to learn about some of the elements of farming. There arent many parts of agricultural production that you can bring into the classroom. Many would make too big a mess on the floor like cattle or are so slow in developing like grain crops. But potatoes are different and provide an opportunity for teachers to integrate many elements of the subjects they teach into practical applications.
The potato council have developed the project aptly named Potatoes for Schools.
There are several organisations out there doing some great work, unfortunately none of them in Northern Ireland. FACE covering England and Wales and RHET in Scotland to name just a couple of the well known ones. Open farm Sunday probably qualifies as a great learning and communications event as well although working in a slightly different way. As Im not fond of typing Im going to leave you to follow the links and get more information straight from the jorses mouth
