Its hard to believe thats its a year since I was in London for my Nuffield briefing and the contemporary scholars conference. Sitting in a room in the farmers Club hearing about everyones study topics then rushing around London trying to stay awake during some of the meetings was a challenge for this country boy. What was the feeling I most reflect on, being humbled by the people around me. The passion and professionalism of the group has impressed me from we met and I look forward to having a beer with everyone when we next get together and reflect on our adventures.
What has happened to me since then? Well where do I begin. Not only have I travelled the world and met lots of interesting people and see many exciting things but I have become more involved and passionate about my industry. Upon returning home from Brussels fuming at how a pompous prat from DEFRA (no not you Alex) could stand up in front of us dictating really got my dander (temper) up so much that I became involved with the National Beef Association and am now on the NI council.
But the most startling thing is that every now and then something happens, totally out of the blue that makes me stop and think and again feel humbled. Despite what we might think and do we have very little control of where life takes us and Im pleased to say that there arent too many things I look back on and say I would do that differently, but the amazing things that I have had the opportunity to do since becoming a Nuffield Scholar still put a little smile on my face when I think about them, honestly I not loosing my mind!!
People now want to hear my opinion, although some may regret it later. Getting the chance to influence change in the beef industry is something I thought I would never do but I am doing it now. Tomorrow I speak at the NI NBA Beef Expo which is my first "big time" engagement and Im the only one in my group that isnt either a Dr or recognised specialist in their field. Bugger, is it too late to chicken out??? Not a chance, put a microphone in my hand and Im here!
Ive also been asked to get involved in something else which I cant tell you about right now but I had to take a deep breath when the question was asked. Just so you know I am staying single its much more serious and fun than that so I will keep you posted and let you know when the embargo is lifted!
Anyway enough of this nonsense, happy first anniversary 09 Nuffielders and heres to many more and looking forward to being able to say these new lot arent as good as we were!
