Time flies when your having fun has certainely been the case for the past two weeks. I dont know where the time has gone.
Week before last I based myself in Armidale 5 hours north of Sydney and the centre for almost everything regarding livestock research, teaching and commercialisation. The University of New England is home to ABRI, AGBU, the NSW DPI, and the Beef CRC ( I will get their weblinks posted today so you can check them out for yourselves) to name but a few of the organisations on campus.
My first stop of the week was however to the CSIRO laboratory just outside Armidale. Laboratory is the wrong description as it is about 6000 acres with cattle and sheep covering all sorts of production research. They are a little different in the fact that they have gone beyond discovery type work and are looking at applications. Thre are lots of interesting things going on here but one in particular is a comparison between yarded and pastured cattle investigating their preferences in terms of confinment system and feed choice.
Back to the UNE I ended up spending three days there instead of the one that was budgeted. Itis a one stop shop and I think its safe to say I took full advantage meeting the people behind the scenes at Breedplan, geneticists, meat scientists, to be honest anyone that would stand still long enough to quiz!
I visited a couple of Hereford herds along the way, the Bowen stud near Barraba and the Yalgoo stud near Walcha and the Merino stud of a fellow Nuffield Scholar.
The cold hard realities of life determine what goes here and what stays. Many parts of the country are in their 3rd year of drought and its telling a tale. I saw40oC this week on the car's thermometer. If theres a breeze at all its like stepping out of the car into a fan heater. Thats just a quick update on last week, that just leaves me the week gone by which has been a little more relaxed but has seen a few more miles covered.
